The Arch of the Pópulo was the primitive Puerta del Mar (“Doorway to the sea”), since it was the main access to the port area of the city.

At the beginning of the 17th century the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Pópulo was built before it, which gives it the appearance of a passage way that we see now today.

The characteristics of the interior face match techniques used in the Islamic building of walls in the 10th and 11th centuries, while the arch very possibly was originally a horseshoe arch. The disposal of its segments allows us to position it in the 12th century, in the Almohad period.
