The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Europa (Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Europa) is one of the places you have to visit if you are in Algeciras. Located in the Plaza Alta, this small building houses the statue of Christ Tied to the Column and María Santísima de Las Lágrimas.
The present building dates back to 1769, since the original built 79 years before was very affected by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. In the Baroque style, here the statue of Nuestra Señora de Europa was saved after the capture of Gibraltar by the English. Curiously, the building was completely remodeled about 25 years ago and for a time worked as a woodwork shop.
