Jimena de la Frontera

"Jimena de la Frontera, is integrated in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, it’s a perfect destination for nature and active tourism lovers. Its rich heritage and its important cultural events encourage visiting this magnificent village."

Situated between the Sierra de Ronda and Algeciras Bay, the fortress overlooks from the hill a blanket of white houses. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the site of the Laja Alta preserves rock paintings which are the only example of maritime scenes from the bronze period in Spain. With the Muslim invasion, Jimena strengthens itself to serve as a strategic enclave. Its most important patrimonial heritage is its castle from the 13th-14 century (declared of Cultural Interest).
In addition to the turreted walls stand the Homenaje Tower (the keep), the Albarrana Tower, the Aljibes (wells) and entry doors such as the Arco del Reloj. The Baño de la Reina Mora is located behind the Castle. Other jewels of its religious architecture is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, the campanario of the Santa Maria la Coronada Church(bell tower), the Misericórdia Church and, outside the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (15th-17th century).
The city hosts two events of great cultural significance. The first is the International Music Festival (July), which will surprise you for the quality of its participants and scenarios in natural areas in the magnificent historic village. We must also highlight the Flamenco Festival of the Estacion de Jimena.
Hiking along, cycling or horseback riding, are some of the star activities. There is a beautiful route that runs along the channel of the Hozgarganta River takes around three to four hours.
