This white village surrounded by fertile countryside has been inhabited since ancient times due to its strategic location as a natural crossroads. Witnesses of this primitive presence are the Alberite Dolmen and the Torrevieja site, which add to the Towns Historical Museum.
The village’s heritage has monuments like Matrera Castle, the Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes Church, San Francisco Church and Convent, the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Montañas and mansions such as the Palacio de los Rios or the Topete.
Next to Alberite Dolmen, one of the oldest megalithic structures of the peninsula, the Torrevieja site, this confirms the Neolithic, Tartessian, turdetani and Andalus presence in Villamartin today.
