You wíll find few places in your getaways that preserve the essence of their past and look at the visitor with the joy of Vejer de la Frontera. This post summarises 10 ways to enjoy your stay in this little paradise in the province of Cadiz, where you only have two things to do: let yourself go and smile…
1. STROLLING ALONG ITS STREETS
One of the first activities we suggest is getting lost in its streets. Yes, that’s right: you have to lose yourself without following any guide or map. When you enter the Jewish Quarter (barrio de la Juderia), enjoy its white and narrow alleys. Discover the baroque houses and their beautiful patios or one of the most homely castles you’ll have ever visited.
You just have to let yourself go, go aimlessly, simply enjoying Vejer… The next day you’ll surely repeat the experience!
2. SOAKING UP ITS HISTORY
For history lovers, Vejer is excellent. Inhabited since the Paleolithic, it was fortified in the Bronze Age. It was occupied by Romans and Muslims, and reconquered definitively by the Christians in 1285, under the mandate of Sancho IV. This blend of cultures is represented in its streets, giving it a special richness. This is specially noticeable in its historic centre, declared Historic-Artistic Grouping in 1976.
3. ENJOYING ITS PEOPLE
One of the things that we enjoy the most when we are in Vejer is the contact with its people. When you’re there you’ll discover that the people from Vejer (vejeriego) are born anywhere, maybe from Vejer, Madrid or from any part of Germany…
Take advantage of your stay to meet them, because they’re worth it!
4. SAVORING A UNIQUE CUISINE
Vejer is lucky to have all the necessary ingredients on hand to have one of the most important and complete gastronomic offerings in the province, providing an interesting combination of Andalusian and international cuisine (Moroccan, Italian, AsianÖ).
5. SLEEPING IN PARADISE
Lodgings in Vejer have a spectacular level. Charming hotels, hostels, some spectacular Bed and Breakfast, incredible rural apartments… They have everything you need to pamper yourself: spas, Arab baths, beauty centres….
Try and sleep in Vejer: nowhere will you rest like here.
6. LETTING TIME GO BY IN El Palmar…
You’ll find paradise at the feet of Vejer. To reach it, you just have to look for the signs “El Palmar”. It will take you to one of our favorite beaches in Cadiz, where you just have to let time go by and relax. If you want, enjoy its beach bars and eat in its restaurants. You can also practise active tourism, like surfing
By the way, donít you dare to leave without seeing the sunset!
7. LIVING THE ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL OFFER
Vejer is one of the places of the province with more artistic activity, even superior to most of the most populated municipalities. The offer is extensive: concerts, exhibitions, museums, congresses, markets and crafts that give this land a unique charm for culture lovers.
8. REMEMBERING ESSENCES OF ITS TWIN TOWNS
Vejer reminds you of its twin towns on the other side of the strait. Anyone who has walked the streets of Chefchaouen will immediately begin to associate both places. Despite the centuries and the distance, the essences never get lost…
9. LIVING ITS FESTIVITIES AND TRADITIONS
Vejer doesn’t rest. By February, its calendar of festivities and events is launched with the arrival of Carnival: its Holy Week that culminates with the famous Toro Embolao, the Spring Fair, the Romeria, the Candelá de San Juan, the Flamenco night… You only have to choose which one to attend (check the calendar on the tourism website of Vejer).
It’s a village that honours its traditions and sets an example by adapting them to these times. For example, paying homage to the vejeriega woman, who for centuries had to go cobijá (hidden behind her black clothes), but who one day “uncovered her face for the sake of freedom”.
10. GOING UP TO ITS ROOFTOP TERRACES
Vejer is a village of rooftops terraces, hanged up white clothes that share space with beautiful terraces where you can relax and enjoy the views. There, you will find small areas where you can finish that book you cannot stop reading or have a drink in the different places enabled in them while you listen to good music.
There, you1ll find out that this village is a balcony to the sea.
The moment your visit is over, you will realise that youíve been bewitched by Vejer’s spell and you won’t want to leave.
