The Plaza Alta has been the scene of many important chapters in the history of Algeciras and is one of the most significant and popular places in the city.

In the early 19th century, General Castaños proposed the construction before the Grand Admiral Manuel Godoy, with the aim of turning it into a monument which would remind that time forever.

Of extraordinary dimensions in its two centuries of life it has received different names and has undergone some changes from the original project. The most significant is the installation in 1929 of the unique flooring that the Square has, designed by the Sevillian ceramic factories called Cerámica Santa Ana and Cerámica de Triana Casa González.
