The Endorheic Nature Reserve complex of El Puerto de Santa María is composed of three lagoons: the Salada, the Chica and the Juncosa Lagoons.
The Salada Lagoon is the largest one and, just like the Chica Lagoon, it dries up in the summertime, but in high rainfall years they are kept flooded during all the seasons. The Juncosa lagoon, due to its size and temporary character virtually stays dry almost throughout the entire year, except for some specific periods of time when continuous raining occurs, which is why it is almost entirely covered by vegetation.
The ecological value of this reserve lies in being an important point for the conservation of birds, some endangered.
