"Tarifa, the realm of windsurfing and gateway to Europe, is one of the best-known tourist destinations in the province of Cadiz. Its incredible beaches, leisure, active tourism and gastronomy, its cultural heritage with important archaeological sites, make this destination a must-see. ”

Facing the sea it is the closest point to Africa from Europe. It has numerous prehistoric remains like the Phoenician remains of the Island of Las Palomas and remains from the Roman period being the city of Baelo Claudia, the most significant archaeological find of the whole province. Called by the Muslims Al- Yazirat Tarif (Tarifa Island) has been an important strategic point as a border line.
From the walls from the 10th to 15thcentury you can observe two distinct sections: the first from the Islamic period surrounding a smaller enclosure and the second surrounds the entire old town. Here are the churches of San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Maria. The Guzman el Bueno Castle is one of its monumental jewels. Built at the orders of Cordoba’s Caliph Abderramán III it’s very well preserved highlighting its large octagonal tower, the Puerta de Jerez and the Vigia towers (watchtowers) from the 16th century.
Its idyllic and extensive wind-swept beaches by the strong east winds in Tarifa make it a mecca for water sports enthusiasts such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, the Blokart sailing or diving, among others. After the Playa Chica, Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches comes the beach of Bolonia, with wild sandy dunes and in one of its areas you can practice nudism. The Canuelo is a beach with a natural environment, with lofty vegetation, fine sand, crystal clear water, you can reach the beach from the Lighthouse Camarinal. Los Alemanes beach stretches from the La Plata Cape to Gracia Cape. Finally, Atlanterra is the continuation of Zahara de los Atunes.
The area of Tarifa extends across four different protected natural areas: the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, El Estrecho Natural Park, the Los Lances Natural protected beach which is an area where many birds come together going to and from the crossing at the Strait of Gibraltar- and the Natural Monument of the Bolonia Dune, which is more than 30 metres high and is situated on the Punta Camarinal isthmus, on the southern Atlantic coast of Cadiz.
